Salih Sari, director of the Department of Nuclear Energy and International Projects of the Turkish Energy Ministry, said on June 20 that Turkey plans to build three more nuclear power plants in addition to the "Akkuyu" nuclear power plant.

Speaking at the 9th Nuclear Power Plant NPPES Summit in Istanbul, Saleh Salah said: "We will continue to consult with Russia and South Korea on the construction of the Sinop nuclear power plant in northern Turkey. We are discussing with China the construction of a third nuclear power plant in Thrace, western Turkey. We are in discussions with American, British and French companies about the construction of a fourth small modular reactor."

Saleh Salah pointed out that in addition to the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, Turkey plans to build three more nuclear power plants with at least 12 units.

The Akkuyu nuclear power plant, built with Russian participation, is Turkey's first nuclear power plant. According to the plan, when all four units equipped with the Russian VVER-1200 reactor are put into operation, the plant will generate 35 billion KWH of electricity per year, which can meet 10 percent of Turkey's electricity demand.
