Seoul, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Lu Rui and Chen Yi South Korean civic groups held a rally in downtown Seoul on Monday to strongly oppose the Japanese government's plan to release water contaminated by the Fukushima nuclear disaster into the sea.

Civic groups such as the Korea-Japan Action for Peace and Justice in History and the Korean Committee for the June 15 Joint Declaration gathered in Sejong-dao, Seoul yesterday afternoon to urge the Japanese government to take responsible actions to stop the release of radioactive water into the sea.

Holding placards saying, "Don't pollute the sea," and chanting, "We oppose the release of radioactive water from Japan into the sea," Korean citizens called for a joint stop to Japan's plan to release radioactive water into the sea.

Lee Jae-myung, leader of South Korea's largest opposition party, the Minjoo Party, attended the rally. Lee said the South Korean president and government have no reason to agree with the Japanese government's plan to release contaminated water into the sea "regardless of whether neighboring countries suffer losses and whether the world's oceans are polluted."

On April 13, 2021, the Japanese government officially decided to filter and dilute millions of tons of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea. Despite strong opposition from the Japanese fishing industry and some local officials, as well as strong opposition and doubts from China, South Korea and other neighboring countries, the Japanese government is still ignoring the opposition. In January 2023, the Japanese government set the time for the release of contaminated water from Fukushima as "spring or summer this year."
