European Nuclear Alliance Draws up 'Road map' for Nuclear Po

The European Union's nuclear power capacity is expected to rise from 100 gigawatts to 150 gigawatts by 2050, according to a "roadmap" for the development of nuclear power in Europe, drawn up by member states at a meeting in Paris on Thursday.

The meeting was convened by the French Ministry of Energy Transformation and attended by representatives from 14 member countries of the European Nuclear Alliance, including Belgium and Bulgaria. Italy, which has observer status, and Britain, a guest country, also attended.

According to a press release issued by the French Ministry of Energy Transformation on the same day, the meeting will mainly discuss two topics: first, how to establish an independent European nuclear supply chain; The second is the conditions for the revival of the European nuclear industry. Participants signed a joint statement calling for a European action plan to promote cooperation in technology, innovation and safety standards in the nuclear energy sector.

The communique predicts that if the EU builds 30 to 45 new large reactors and develops small modular reactors on the basis of continued safe operation of existing nuclear facilities, its installed nuclear capacity could rise to 150 gigawatts by 2050.

'This meeting sends a clear signal about the importance of nuclear power in Europe's energy strategy, both to strengthen Europe's energy sovereignty and to accelerate decarbonization and climate goals,' the communique said.

This is the third meeting of the members of the European "nuclear Union", which was formed at the initiative of France, with the first meeting taking place in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 28.
