South Korea says its Fukushima mission will assess the safet

release time:2023-05-09

Yonhap News Agency, May 9, the ROK Foreign Ministry said on May 9 that it will send a delegation to Japan to inspect the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant. The ROK side will be able to independently check and evaluate the safety of Japan's treatment of contaminated water from multiple levels.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry reported the work of the delegation to Japan to the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee of the National Assembly. The South Korean government will send a delegation to Japan from April 23 to 24. South Korea's Foreign Ministry said the delegation will inspect nuclear wastewater treatment facilities and collect information needed for scientific and technical analysis. However, the actual scope of the mission is likely to be controversial, given that Japanese government officials said the South Korean delegation will not assess the safety of contaminated water, Japanese media reported.

The leaders of the ROK and Japan held talks on Monday and agreed to send a delegation consisting of officials and experts to Japan. Accordingly, Korea and Japan are planning to hold a ministerial-level consultation this week to discuss the size of the delegation and the specific schedule.

Meanwhile, according to Kyodo News, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yasminoru Nishimura told a press conference after the cabinet meeting on September 9, Regarding the visit of Korean experts to the region on October 23, I hope that Korea will have a better understanding of the safety of sea discharge. Japan has already been verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency, and Nishimura stressed that South Korea's inspection "is not an assessment or confirmation of the safety of the treated water."
