According to Japan's NHK television on Monday, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant at the time of the Fukushima nuclear accident was contaminated by high levels of radioactive materials. The removal of the distribution pipes started in March 2022, but has been plagued by problems since then.
What needs to be removed are the SGTS pipes installed in the No. 1 and No. 2 units of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear Power plant. After the accident 12 years ago, the inside of the piping was seriously contaminated with radioactive levels, forcing the Tokyo Electric Power Company to remove it remotely. The project started in March 2022 and was expected to be completed in one month. However, the project was interrupted from time to time because the cutting tool used to remove the device frequently got stuck in the pipe and could not be moved. The pipe was successfully removed only once.
Tokyo Electric Power Co., or TEPCO, had previously adjusted the construction plan and started work again on April 19, with plans to complete the removal of piping by the end of May. Recently, however, TEPCO halted work again after discovering a defect in some parts of the large crane used to remove the device. The company is now considering changing its plan to remove piping in other ways. NHK said the pipe removal project had been 'bogged down', highlighting the difficulties of the plant's demolition.
