According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's Foreign Ministry has formed a small task force in December 2022 to deal with Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant pollution into the sea.

Yoon Hyun-soo, director general of the Foreign Ministry's climate, environment, science and diplomatic Affairs bureau, will lead the project, with a team of working-level officials from the Asia Pacific Bureau and the International Law Bureau. The task Force aims to promote coordination among relevant departments on dealing with nuclear wastewater.

In October 2018, the South Korean government set up an inter-ministerial response team involving 10 ministries, including the Office for Government Policy Coordination, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Information and Communication, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, to deal with the discharge of wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

With the release of contaminated water into the sea approaching and the drafting of a comprehensive assessment report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the final stage, the South Korean Foreign Ministry has set up its own task force to coordinate work more efficiently and respond more systematically, the report said.

The Japanese government has announced it will begin diluting contaminated water with seawater and releasing it into the sea at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in the spring of 2023, as storage tanks are nearing capacity. Japan plans to dilute the concentration of tritium in sewage to 1,500 becquerels per liter, which is 1/40 of the country's safe limit.
