release time:2023-02-21

In mid-January, Japan said that it would start the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the sea "during the spring and summer" of this year. This move has drawn skepticism and criticism from many countries, including Japan, who believe that the direct dumping into the sea is extremely irresponsible and will pose a serious threat to the Marine ecology and environment once implemented. Footage has emerged showing the Tokyo Electric Power Company preparing for the release of contaminated water into the sea at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant is producing 100,000 litres of nuclear-contaminated water a day, mainly made up of groundwater, rainwater seeping into the area and water used for cooling, according to Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator responsible for discharging the water. As of February, more than 1.32 million tons of treated water had been stored here, and related facilities to go with it are also under construction.

Tepco staff: We hope to complete the construction of both the seaside and the mountainside in the spring of 2023 and be ready to discharge the treated nuclear contaminated water.

Tepco says it uses a variety of filtration systems, including a multi-nuclide removal device, that can remove 62 radioactive elements, including cesium and strontium, from the water, but tritium remains. Tepco said it would limit the amount of tritium emitted annually to 22 trillion becquerels, the annual standard for wastewater discharge in Japan before the accident. Tepco officials said the emission period would last at least "30 to 40 years" until the plant ceased operations.

There has been strong opposition from local residents, environmental groups and the international community.
