Defying opposition, Tepco says it needs to dump 400,000 tonn

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) recently released an estimate that the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant needs to discharge about 400,000 tons of treated nuclear water into the sea before 2030 to ensure sufficient space for the decommissioning project, Japanese media "Fukushima Friends" reported Thursday. According to the plan, Tepco needs to set aside about 50,000 to 110,000 square meters of open space at the Fukushima plant by 2030, when the emptied containers of nuclear water will be removed and the demolition facilities will be set up. Currently, there are 1,066 containers of contaminated water and 1.32 million tons of contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The containers holding 400,000 tons of contaminated water account for about 40 percent of the total. The plant produces about 100 tons of contaminated water a day due to groundwater flowing into the reactor buildings and other factors. Tepco calculated the amount of contaminated water that would have to be released into the ocean by 2030, taking into account the amount of contaminated water produced. Tepco announced the figures at a recent meeting in Fukushima City. Civic groups at the meeting called on Tepco to inform the public, especially young people, of its plans to release sewage into the sea in detail. The Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan is scheduled to discharge water into the sea as early as this spring, which has been widely questioned and opposed by the international community and aroused strong concerns in Japan.
