The Canadian Nuclear Laboratory in collaboration with the Pa

release time:2023-02-01

The Canadian Nuclear Laboratory (CNL) will collaborate with particle accelerator hub TRIUMF in nuclear and materials science and technology. A Memorandum of understanding (MOU) between CNL and TRIUMF identifies areas of collaboration, including the delivery of joint research projects and the sharing of scientific information and equipment.

Dr. Jeff Griffin, Vice President of Science and Technology at CNL, said: "CNL and TRIUMF have worked constructively together in the past to conduct joint research, and we see this agreement as an opportunity to really take that relationship into the future. As Canada's national nuclear laboratory, we see ourselves as a national asset that can be used to help enable the mobilization of knowledge, stimulate innovation and intellectual property development, And advance solutions to national and industry challenges."

Dr Nigel Smith, Director of TRIUMF, says: "This work will focus on topics of mutual interest, including health sciences; Materials science and radiation; Analytical and imaging techniques; Treatment and management of highly radioactive components; Network security; As well as accelerators, particle detection and reactor technology. The agreement "provides new and exciting opportunities for synergies in the field of nuclear science in Canada". It will strengthen Canadian science in many ways, from advances in accelerator science and nuclear research to training the next generation of scientific leaders, as well as strengthening Canada's strategic edge in the development and production of critical life-saving medical isotopes."

CNL manages and operates sites across Canada on behalf of the federal state-run corporation Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). It provides a focal point for collaboration between government, the nuclear industry, the private sector and academia. It also supports the operation of Canada's nuclear fleet, as well as government priorities in clean energy, public health, environmental management and national security. Founded in Vancouver in 1968, TRIUMF is home to the largest accelerator of its kind in the world (the 520MeV cyclotron), as well as the world's most powerful superconducting linear accelerator for the production of rare isotopes.
