release time:2023-01-31
An operating reactor at Kansai Electric Power Co. 's Takahama nuclear power plant in Japan automatically stopped Monday afternoon and is now cooling normally. The cause of the failure is under investigation.
According to information released by Japan's nuclear watchdog, Kansai Electric Power Company reported to the committee at 15:21 (Beijing time 14:21) that the No. 4 reactor at the Takahama nuclear Power plant automatically stopped because of an alarm that the neutron beam inside the reactor was rapidly decreasing.
The regulator's message said the current cooling of the reactor is proceeding normally, there are no abnormal radiation levels at the monitoring sites and there is no impact on the surrounding environment. Kansai Electric Power is investigating the details of the failure.
The Takahama Nuclear Power Plant is located in Takahama, Oii-prefecture, Fukui Prefecture. There are four reactors in the nuclear power plant. The No. 4 reactor was restarted after a regular overhaul in early November 2022, and the No. 1 and No. 2 reactors are still undergoing regular overhaul.
