release time:2023-01-28
South Korea's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it has been urging Japan to take responsible measures after the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan spewed water into the sea as early as this spring, Yonhap reported. A South Korean foreign Ministry official said that South Korea and Japan have been holding close consultations, and the South Korean side asked the Japanese side to transparently provide security information to the South in a timely manner and take responsible countermeasures. The official also said that Korea requested the IAEA to conduct transparent and objective safety verification on multilateral occasions, including the regular board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the General conference held in September last year, and that Korean experts and research institutes are actively participating in IAEA verification activities. The South Korean government is also reviewing the obligations of the Japanese government and procedures for resolving disputes in accordance with international law, and listening to international experts and scientists to understand the legal and factual situation. The Japanese government held a cabinet meeting on the disposal of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear accident on January 13. The meeting confirmed that the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant will start in the spring or summer of 2023. It is reported that the Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to build an undersea tunnel about 1 km long from the coastal Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to discharge water into the Pacific Ocean after treatment of diluted so-called radioactive material standards.
