Samsung Heavy Industries has completed the conceptual design of "CMSR Power Barge", a floating device for offshore nuclear power generation, and obtained the basic ABS class certification from the US, Seoul Economic reported on January 4.

CMSR Power Barge is a fusion of nuclear energy and shipbuilding technology. It is a new concept of power generation equipment using small nuclear reactor (CMSR) technology at sea. The construction site and equipment restrictions are relatively easy, and construction time can be reduced to about two years. The "CMSR Power Barge" can carry between two and eight 100 MW class CMSRS, depending on the scale of power production needs.

Samsung Heavy Industries signed a business agreement with Denmark's CMSR Development in January last year to develop floating nuclear power generation equipment.

Starting with the certification, the company plans to commercialize the product by 2028.

Samsung Heavy Industries said CMSR Power Barge could be used not only as an alternative to thermal power, but also as a source of electricity and heat for industrial engineering, heating, hydrogen production and seawater desalination equipment.
