Russia's Sputnik news agency on November 24 quoted the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as saying on November 23 that the external power supply of the Zaporoge nuclear power plant has been cut again and it is now relying on its own diesel generators.
"The Zaporothermal nuclear power plant has once again been cut off from external power supply and, as a substitute, is relying on its own emergency diesel generators to obtain the electricity needed to cool the reactors and other important functions for nuclear safety," the IAEA said.
Meanwhile, according to the satellite news agency and the UN website, UN Under-Secretary-General Carlo Dicarlo said on December 23 that the United Nations is deeply troubled by the situation at the Zaporogero nuclear power plant.
"We are deeply disturbed by the situation at Zaporoge, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe," dicarlo said. The world cannot afford a nuclear catastrophe."
"I reiterate the risk of these attacks," she stressed. "Just a few hours ago, the IAEA informed that the plant had lost external power supply and was using diesel generators to provide cooling and basic nuclear safety functions. All military operations in and around the plant should cease immediately."
