The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Japan (NRC) for a review of its plan to measure 30 types of radioactive substances in the contaminated water, Kyodo News reported.
Cesium 137, strontium 90 and iodine 129 were reportedly measured. These 30 substances will be measured separately from tritium, which cannot be removed using ALPS.
On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan, triggering a massive tsunami. A large amount of radioactive material leaked from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant under the dual impact of the earthquake and tsunami. In April 2021, the Japanese government officially decided to filter and dilute the contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant before discharging it into the sea, and the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Japan officially approved the plan in July 2022.
