release time:2022-11-09
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida conducted drills in the event of an accident at the plant, the prime minister's official residence said on its Instragram page.
"[The prime minister] participated in a general exercise to deal with a simulated accident situation at the Mihama Nuclear Power Plant operated by Japan's Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO).
An emergency situation due to a nuclear power plant accident was declared during the exercise. We believe in the efficiency of relevant government departments and local administrative bodies and have identified problems that should be corrected." The exercise rehearsed the shutdown of the reactor cooling system at the third Mihama nuclear power plant due to a magnitude 6 earthquake in Fukui Prefecture. The prime minister held a video conference with local government representatives and nuclear plant leaders.
During the drill, Mr. Kishida spoke at a "press conference," declaring an "emergency situation" and calling on people to abide by coronavirus precautions, stay put and evacuate in an orderly manner. The exercise took place on November 5 during World Tsunami Awareness Day, which was established at the initiative of Japan in 2016.
