On September 27, German Economy Minister Jer Habeck announced that in order to cope with the expected energy shortage this winter, the country has officially postponed its plan to withdraw from nuclear power at the end of this year.
Habeck told reporters in Berlin that the decision to suspend Germany's nuclear exit was prompted by a shortage of electricity in France due to the closure of more than half of the country's nuclear power plants.
Although most Germans are in favour of abandoning nuclear power, they also agree to a temporary extension.
In the wake of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant radiation disaster in 2011, the German government led by then-Chancellor Angela Merkel drew up a nuclear power exit plan to gradually shut down all of Germany's 17 nuclear power plants due to safety concerns, CCTV News reported. Only three of Germany's nuclear power plants remain in operation and were due to close this year.
