The IAEA launched the Synergy and Standardization Initiative
release time:2022-07-11
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced the launch of the Synergy and Standardization Initiative for Nuclear Energy Development (NHSI) in March 2022, aiming to accelerate the safe deployment of advanced nuclear reactors, especially modular small reactors, in order to achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
On 23 and 24 June, the IAEA held a launching meeting of the initiative in Vienna, attended by 125 representatives from 33 countries, which discussed a roadmap for strengthening the synergy of regulatory activities and standardizing industry approaches.
The AGENCY said it would host the next NHSI plenary meeting in 2023 to evaluate the latest progress by 2023. In 2024, the industry and regulatory pathways will take the initiative further under the IAEA framework, culminating in a road map with a concrete action plan.
