The operator of Isar 2, Germany's largest nuclear power plant, said it could operate until 2023 if the German government does not force it to close by the end of the year, bild newspaper reported on June 25. 
 
 
 
The plant's operator reportedly said the Isar 2 unit has enough fuel to generate up to 2.25 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and continue operating until 2023.  "Once the government gives us the signal we need, we will do everything we can to keep it operating safely," the plant's operator said in a statement. "That signal has not yet arrived, so we are continuing to prepare for closure." 
 
 
 
In March, Germany's deputy chancellor and economy minister, Joachim Habeck of the Green Party, said he would "not reject it [nuclear power] on ideological grounds", but stressed that "preliminary examination shows that it would not help us".  "People want to be able to consider all options," said Bundesfinance Minister And FDP president Lindner, citing inflation and other factors, According to Deutsche Welle.  He said that while he did not think it would be profitable to invest in new nuclear power at the moment, "Germany should not be complacent about an issue that is being discussed all over the world.  I suggest we put our arguments on the table without prejudice." 
 
 
 
Isar 2, Emsland and Neckarwetheim 2 are the last nuclear plants to generate electricity in Germany, which decided to phase out the fuel after the Fukushima disaster in Japan a decade ago. The three units are expected to close by the end of this year.
