Belarus will present its report on nuclear waste management
release time:2022-06-15
Belarus will submit a national report to the Review conference of the States Parties to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. The review conference will begin on 27 June in Vienna, Austria. Aleksandr Dokuchayev, Deputy Director of the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor), spoke at a media briefing held at the BelTA Press Centre to discuss new trends in the global nuclear safety regime in Belarus.
Aleksandr Dokuchayev said: "We will soon be defending the national report of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. The review meeting will begin in two weeks' time, on 27 June, at the venue of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
During the review conference, parties will have the opportunity to present and discuss their national reports, review the measures they have taken to meet their commitments under the Joint Convention, and identify areas where progress has been made, as well as identify best practices and mandates.
In addition to the above-mentioned joint conventions, Belarus is also a party to the Convention on Nuclear Safety." Here's the thing. Countries do self-assessments and produce national reports that, thanks to the IAEA, can be accessed and studied by other countries. In turn, we study other countries' reports, exchange views, and then defend national reports on the IAEA grounds. This work reveals both positive aspects and problems that need to be addressed. This work is designed to enhance the security of individual and other nations and represents the foundation of the global nuclear security regime, "the official explained.
Belarus had no opportunity to defend its national report within the framework of the Convention on Nuclear Safety three years ago. Aleksandr Dokuchayev added: "We are now upgrading our report and it will cover a period of six years -- from 2017 to 2022, instead of three years.
